On the Road
The best way to picture the countryside in this part of Eastern Europe is to recall the road scenes from the movie Everything is Illuminated, even though it was shot in Czechoslovakia where the roads are in much better shape. Unlike the cities, where so much had been rebuilt, and modernization taken hold, the roads and the land still resembled the landscapes of a nineteenth-century world. But of course, a world where horses did not compete with cars for room on the road.
