Jewish Kishinev
Could this be the same store, whose smashed windows were reported in accounts of the pogrom? The remains, or at least traces, of “Jewish Kishinev,” as the pogrom area is called, coexist now inside the modern city of Chisinau, with high rises towering over the older dwellings, recognizable by their distinctive rooftops and cellars (sites of pogrom violence).
When I stood in front the store window, contemplating its display of ordinary groceries, I was tempted to believe, and unable to resist imagining that the pogrom victims once shopped here daily, maybe even my grandparents: a 7/11 equivalent circa 1903.
But what really would that accomplish? The found place cannot replace lost time. A newly created website is devoted to recreating links to the past.
